Dr. Karen Cross is a Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon and a Surgeon Scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital. She is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and an adjunctive professor at Ryerson University. Her research aims are to bring innovative technology from the bench to the bedside.
Dr. Cross has won several National and International awards related to her research such as the Wound Healing Society Young Investigator Award, and the Trauma Association of Canada Research Award.
She has also been recognized for her excellence as a teacher, her collegiality, generosity, mentorship and humanitarianism by receiving the Dr. Hugh Thompson Humanitarian Award and the Leo Mahoney Teaching Award.
Dr. Julie Perry (MSc. PhD, University of Toronto) joined the lab in January 2016 from McMaster University, where she was a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Institute for Infectious Disease Research. Her main research interests in the CROSSlab are the bacterial biofilms that colonize wounds, and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes within these polymicrobial communities.
Paul completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto in 2013. He joined the CROSSlab in April 2016, and will be involved in all aspects of data collection in the various clinical trials at the CROSSlab. For the past three years, Paul was working in the Infectious Disease Research department of Mount Sinai Hospital where he worked on various regional and nationwide influenza surveillance projects.
Nadeem is the most recent addition to the CROSSlab. He is pursuing a career in medicine and will be working on a multicentre mHealth based project.
Janelle is a student at the UofT Faculty of Medicine. Her research interests include the use of topical oxygen and nutrition in the healing of complex skin wounds.
Ruby is currently studying Medicine at the University College Cork, Ireland. She has a Bachelor’s of Kinesiology and Master’s of Neuroscience from McMaster University, and a Bachelor’s of Education from the University of Toronto. Her research interests include hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, stroke, and congestive heart failure. Current projects include a clinical trial evaluating the effect of low-frequency ultrasound debridement on biofilm removal and wound closure.
Josh is a student at the UofT Faculty of Medicine. Josh has been involved with one of our mHealth research projects to help us understand how diabetic patients check their feet and if they use technology.
