Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

According to the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR), between 1996-1997 and 2006-2007, hip procedures increased by 59%, in Canada and the number of joint replacements performed is expected to increase in the future. The current trend is that more than 50 % of those people are younger than 65 years of age and are more physically active.

Advances in joint replacements are allowing for improved implant designs.

St. Michael’s Hospital has an extensive hip and knee arthroplasty database with long term follow up.

  • Our patients are followed postoperatively at 6 weeks, 3 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and 20 years.
  • At specific intervals a quality of life questionnaire is completed by the patient.

Of those patients in the database, approximately 1000 are involved in specific clinical trials, or have a metal on metal hip or have a ceramic bearing surface and are followed annually.
