Neuro-Oncology Research

We have constructed a program built to allow free transfer of lessons from the lab to the clinic, and insights from the operating room to the lab. Our goal is to push the boundaries of our clinical work and research to improve outcomes for patients with brain tumours.

Clinical Research

Our clinical research is focused on identifying factors that determine outcomes in patients with brain tumours, and is directed toward using these findings in an adaptive manner to modify our practice. We are particularly interested in the role of surgical adjuncts to improve surgical resection of primary brain tumours, including awake craniotomy and functional MRI to facilitate brain mapping, advanced imaging to understand tumour heterogeneity and improve discrimination of tumour from normal tissue, and advanced skull base and minimally invasive approaches to decrease morbidity related to brain manipulation.

Basic and Translational Research-

Our laboratory research is an extension of the operating room. We have focused on creating cell lines and mouse models that recapitulate the tumours that we see in our patients, with the goal of clarifying the biology that defines these tumours. We are particularly interested in identifying mechanisms by which to disable the ability of tumour cells to survive cytotoxic therapies, like radiation and chemotherapy.

Neuro-Oncology Clinic

Dr. Das and Dr. Cusimano specialize in the care of patients with primary brain tumours, including gliomas and brain metastases, and tumours of the skull base, including meningiomas and pituitary tumours. Our expertise includes the use of awake craniotomy and brain mapping, intraoperative navigation and real-time imaging, and endoscopy.
