Introduction to Using Generative AI in Research - Part 1

Target: Internal Research Community

About this event

UHT x T-CAIREM present the AI in Research Workshop Series!

Join us for the first installments of our workshop series on how to use AI in health research. This 2-part introductory workshop led by the Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) will help you to understand the capabilities and limitations of generative AI for research. It will focus on matching different AI tools to specific tasks, prompting fundamentals, and practical methods for checking AI output.

Note: These workshops are designed so that you do not need to attend Part 1 to attend Part 2, but it is highly encouraged to attend both workshops if possible.

Part 1: November 19, 2026 | 10 am - 12 pm | Microsoft Teams

Objectives:

·    Understand the capabilities and limitations of generative AI for research.

·    Overview of general-purpose, literature, coding, visual, and presentation tools.

·    Matching AI tools to different tasks, data, and level of risk.

·    Prompting fundamentals: context, instructions, examples, constraints, and output formats.

·    Iteratively improving an output rather than relying on a single prompt.

·    Short exercises using common research tasks.

·    Apply principles of responsible and ethical AI use in academic research.

Part 2: December 3, 2026 | 10 am - 12 pm  | Microsoft Teams

Objectives:

·    Identify hallucinations, incomplete answers, fabricated citations, and overconfidence.

·    Practical methods for checking claims, references, calculations, and interpretations.

·    Bias, privacy, confidentiality, data security, and copyright.

·    Understand institutional and journal policies regarding AI use in research.

·    AI slide decks in research: findings, narrative, outline, visuals, speaker notes, and citations.

·    A practical checklist for deciding whether and how to use AI for a research task.
