Laupacis Lecture – Advancing Research, Clinical Care and Health System Transformation: Insights from Nova Scotia Health Research

Please join us for the 2026 Laupacis Lecture featuring Dr. Jeannie Shoveller, Vice-President Research at Nova Scotia Health and Professor at Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine, who will present her lecture, “Advancing Research, Clinical Care and Health System Transformation: Insights from Nova Scotia Health Research”. This lecture, part of Medical Grand Rounds, will honour Dr. Andreas Laupacis for his 12-year tenure as Executive Director of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute (LKSKI) and will be moderated by Dr. Andrea Tricco, current Executive Director of the LKSKI.

Learning Objectives

1. Learners will be able to describe examples of key enablers that promote engagement across clinical and health system as well as those situated in the broader research ecosystem.

2. Learners will be able to describe examples of approaches to citizen engagement in research that promote enhanced clinical care and system transformation.

About the Speaker

Jeannie Shoveller serves as Vice-President Research at Nova Scotia Health and as Professor at Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine. Prior to moving to Nova Scotia in 2020, she served in numerous research leadership roles in British Columbia, including: Director of Research at the BC Centre on Substance Use as well as Director, BC HIV Drug Treatment Program, BC Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS; and as Professor (UBC’s Faculty of Medicine).

Dr. Shoveller has been the principal investigator of 30+ studies focused on addressing social health inequities. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and supervised more than 80 Doctoral and Masters students as well as Post-Doctoral Fellows.

As former Chair of the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), she led the development of CIHR’s Strategic Plan (2021-2031), providing a vision that unites the biomedical, clinical, health system and policy as well as population and public health research communities.

Dr. Shoveller is a Member of the Board of Directors for Health Data Research Network of Canada. Dr. Shoveller also serves on the Advisory Council for Vital. She also Chairs the International Scientific Advisory Council for UBC’s AI & Health Network. She is a member of Research Canada’s Board of Directors and was appointed to the Standing Committee on Science at CIHR in 2025.
