Every year in November during Research Month, Unity Health Toronto recognizes the achievements and contributions of members of our research community with Research Awards. This year 14 community members were recognized:
Culture of Discovery Award: Vera Nincic, Saisujani Rasiah, Negin Pak, Robyn Beckett, Lisa Mannik and Vincenza Gruppuso
Legacy Award: Dr. Subodh Verma and Dr. Veronique Miron
Excellence Award: Dr. Chloe Mighton, Kayla Baker, Sonya Grewal and Dr. Nicole Doria
Dalton Charters Leadership Excellence Award: Christina Salmon and Desta Ramlackhansingh
Unity Health Toronto ranked 11th among Canada’s research hospitals and number one in research intensity, according to Research Infosource Inc. These rankings recognize the high level of research productivity of our Research Institute and our quest to generate new knowledge that saves lives and improves patient care. Well done!
Members of the St. Joseph’s Health Centre Oncology Team were selected to present at the Canadian Association of Nursing in Oncology in St. John’s Newfoundland. Nurse Practitioner Christina Zeglinski, Clinical Nurse Educator Kiran Virk and Clinical Research Nurse Linda Karnay spoke about their work on the development of a new multi-modal educational program for oncology nurses.
Dr. Imogen Coe, affiliate scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, and Dr. Jonathon Maguire, St. Michael’s pediatrician and scientist, were both awarded King Charles III medals. Coe was recognized for her contributions to engaging the public and policy makers with STEMM in Canada and for fostering inclusive communities within STEMM. Maguire was recognized for his outstanding work in pediatrics.

Dr. Shane Journeay, physiatrist at Providence Healthcare, presented at the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine’s annual conference. His presented a talk titled “Work related concussion: Epidemiology treatment and return to work.”

Dr. Anna Ly, hospitalist at Providence Healthcare, and Dr. Ashley Verduyn, vice-president of medical affairs and chief of Providence Healthcare, won the MD Program Teaching Award for Excellence from the University of Toronto.
Dr. Courtney Spelliscy, emergency medicine physician at St. Joseph’s, was awarded a MD Program teaching excellence award from the University of Toronto. The award recognizes excellence in undergraduate medical education.
