Dr. Andrew Advani is a Staff Endocrinologist and Full Professor/Clinician Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, St. Michael’s Hospital and Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. Dr. Advani holds the Keenan Chair in Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and University of Toronto. He is Head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Interim Deputy Physician-in-Chief at St. Michael’s Hospital. His research program is focused on improving the lives of people with diabetes now and in the future.

Dr. Advani’s research program has three strands:

1)    Investigating the causes of kidney disease in diabetes, with a focus on epigenetic processes, inflammation, chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury.

2)    Exploring the causes of heart failure, especially heart failure in diabetes, focusing on how inflammation affects heart function.

3)    Understanding the lived experience of those with diabetes and exploring how people with diabetes can partner with their healthcare organization to improve diabetes care.

Dr. Advani completed his medical training at the University of Edinburgh (UK) in 1996 and his PhD at Newcastle University (UK) in 2003. He was appointed on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital in 2008. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He has over 110 publications, has authored three book chapters and holds one patent and one official mark. Dr. Advani has also won awards from the British Hypertension Society, Royal College of Physicians (UK), Diabetes Canada, Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Advani provides care for people living with diabetes, especially those living with Type 1 diabetes.

The Advani Lab is always interested in hearing from highly motivated and accomplished individuals interested in post-doctoral fellowships or graduate studentships.
