Dr. Ann Burchell is a Scientist at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and the Research Director for the St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Family and Community Medicine. She is a Canada Research Chair in Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention. She holds degrees in epidemiology from the University of Toronto (MSc) and McGill University (PhD) and has academic appointments at the rank of Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and Division of Epidemiology, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Burchell’s research program investigates how to prevent STIs with bacteria like syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, and viruses, like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human papillomavirus (HPV), and their adverse outcomes, including cancers caused by these infections. She leads population health and implementation science projects on these topics, with an emphasis on producing evidence that supports their prevention and management in primary care settings.
She has extensive methodological experience in the design and implementation of observational longitudinal studies with primary and secondary data including health administrative data; sexual behaviour and health-access questionnaires; natural history studies using laboratory markers of infection; and pragmatic randomized trials for HPV prevention and improved screening for syphilis, cervical, and anal cancer.
