Practice-Based Researcher

Bio

My name is Celine Callender. I am a Registered Nurse with 21 years of experience in the Emergency Department & Level One Trauma Center at St Michael’s Hospital. I hold a Master of Nursing (Adult Critical and Persistent Illness) from the University of Toronto (2009). I am also an Advanced Trauma Care for Nursing (ATCN) faculty member (2024).

Since 2021, I am one of the two Clinical Educators-Nursing for the Emergency Department at St. Michael’s Hospital. During this time we have significantly improved our Stroke metrics for door-to-CT, door- to-needle, door-to-puncture and door-to reperfusion. We have also received our Level 1 Trauma designation by the ACS (2024).

As a practice-based researcher, I am passionate about the nursing role particularly in acute resuscitation management. Through in-situ simulation, we re-visited the concept of a Nurse Co-Lead for acute resuscitation and have since changed the focus to an ED CPR Coach role. We have since incorporated Zoll Case Reviews in our post-resuscitation debriefs and utilized real-time feedback to improve our CPR metrics.

Additionally, I am passionate about Stroke and Trauma Care and have supported staff across departments as a mentor for the respective BPGs. I am also passionate about ensuring nurses have the resources they need in a timely accessible manner (QR codes linking to a website for critical care infusions commonly used in the ED) and looking for additional opportunities to make their work easier. I am very interested in incorporating innovative education strategies to improve engagement and knowledge retention.

I currently sit on several committees in the organization including Medication System Safety, Hospital Transfusion, Trauma Collaborative Care. Together with my co-clinical educator, we support ongoing Quality Improvement initiatives in the emergency department, such as improving blood culture fill volumes and reducing blood culture contamination rates; improving EMS offload times to under 60 minutes, and door-to-factor pathway.
