Hwee Teoh is an Adjunct Scientist within the Keenan Centre for Biomedical Science in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of Unity Health Toronto. She is cross-appointed in the Divisions of Cardiac Surgery and Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Within the Division of Cardiac Surgery, she is part of Dr Subodh Verma’s pre-clinical/translational research laboratory that currently focuses on profiling regenerative cell exhaustion in cardiometabolic and inflammation-associated disorders before and after pharmacologic interventions. Within the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, she has been part of Dr Lawrence Leiter’s research team that evaluates novel diabetes and lipid-lowering drugs in multinational clinical trials.
Hwee additionally provides oversight for the clinical trial initiatives under the CardioLink research platform that conducts research in heart-kidney-metabolic medicine. Established in 2015, CardioLink has successfully completed multiple single-site, pan-Canada and international studies and trials.
She has contributed to many successful applications for peer-reviewed and industry grant and infrastructure support. Over the years, Hwee has also helped mentor a long list of postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate trainees who now thrive in their chosen career paths.
After completing her BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology at University College London and her PhD in Neuropharmacology at The School of Pharmacy, University of London with Professor Norman Bowery who discovered the GABAB receptor, Hwee undertook postdoctoral training at the National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong before joining St Michael’s. Hwee's research foci at St Michael's have spanned bench to bedside, initially focused on the physiological and molecular/cellular aspects of vascular dysfunction in hypoxia, sepsis and inflammation and then transitioning to clinical trial work in cardiometabolic and surgical medicine.
