Dr. Tom Schweizer is a Professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine (Division of Neurosurgery), University of Toronto, and a Senior Scientist at Unity Health Toronto. He is internationally recognized for his research on concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), using advanced neuroimaging to develop MRI biomarkers that improve diagnosis, predict recovery, and guide clinical care.
His research program integrates multimodal MRI, including structural, diffusion, susceptibility-weighted, and functional MRI, with cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychological assessment to understand how brain injuries affect cognition, behaviour, and long-term brain health, including aging and neurodegeneration.
Dr. Schweizer leads large, multi-site concussion studies and works closely with national and international collaborators to advance the clinical translation of imaging biomarkers of brain injury. He serves as Scientific Director of the Brain Health and Wellness Research Pillar at Unity Health Toronto and Co-Director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (iBEST). His research is supported by major peer-reviewed agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the Alzheimer’s Association (USA).
