Medical Imaging for Research

Our Medical Imaging unit at St. Michael’s Hospital serves as a comprehensive hub for radiology research studies.

We provide a diverse range of research programs and services, catering not only to Unity Health Toronto but also to broader communities and organizations. Through meaningful radiology research projects, our mission is to advance patient care.

In addition to providing research imaging services, we offer co-supervision for medical imaging residents and clinical fellows on research projects. We also provide supervision and co-investigation opportunities for medical imaging research fellows, residents, and students, including those participating as summer or research volunteers.

We would be pleased to discuss whether our team can meet the needs of your particular study. To start a new imaging research study, please email all relevant study documentation, including your complete study protocol, REB approval letter (if available) and imaging guidelines, to:

Imaging Facilities and Capabilities

St. Michael's Hospital Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Research Centre

Neuroimaging

Unity Health neuroimaging scientists actively participate in research projects spanning all three of the Neuroscience Research Programs research priorities (stroke, neurotrauma and neurodegenerative research), supporting the vision of the program to inspire excellence, innovation and collaboration.

Facilities:

Diagnostic & Therapeutic Neuro-angiography

  • Siemens Artis bi-plane neuro-angio machine

  • Philips Allura Clarity FD20 angio machine

Computed Tomography (CT)

  • GE Revolution CT

  • GE VCT scanner with Advantage Workstation

  • GE CT660

.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a Royal College certified specialty that makes use of radioisotopes to diagnose and treat disease.

Nuclear medicine physicians have special training in physics, physiology and pharmacology which is usually combined with knowledge of diagnostic radiology to interpret conventional nuclear medicine and PET studies in conjunction with CT, MRI, xray and ultrasound.

Facilities

Nuclear Medicine resources in the department include:

  • GE Lunar iDXA bone scanner

  • GE Hawkeye/Infinia SPECT/CT

  • Philips Marconi Prism 2000XP dual head SPECT camera

  • Philips Meridian single head gamma camera

  • Capintec Captus 3000 thyroid uptake system

  • Wallac scintillation counter

  • Specialized cardiac gamma camera

Vascular Interventional Radiology

Vascular Interventional Radiology (VIR) improves health outcomes while reducing patient risk by diagnosing and treating diseases using minimally invasive procedures.

Vascular procedures include: angiography, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stents, thrombolytic therapy, embolization, inferior vena cava filter and central venous access.

Facilities

VIR machines include:

  • Philips Allura Clarity FD20 angio machine

  • Siemens Artis bi-plane neuro-angio machine
