Peel region in Ontario has a growing rate of diabetes that is already higher than the province as a whole. Scientists at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health (CRICH) created the Diabetes Atlas for the Region of Peel to help policy-makers, urban planners, community agencies and community groups explore diabetes at the neighbourhood level and shape evidence-informed policy and program responses.
Our research team – which included physicians, epidemiologists, medical geographers, social science researchers and geographic information system experts – generated over 100 maps exploring diabetes across Peel region. The maps illustrate the relationship between diabetes and factors such as socio-economic status, ethnicity and neighbourhood features including walkability, healthy food stores, parks and recreation centres and community-based health services. We also looked at diabetes rates in different neighbourhoods in Peel.
