Critical Care Pillar

Spearheading novel treatments in critical care medicine to enhance patient outcomes and save lives.

About the Pillar

The Critical Care Pillar comprises researchers dedicated to advancing vital research directed at improving the outcomes and experience of people experiencing life-threatening time-sensitive illnesses or injuries.  The areas of focus arise from the Centre of Excellence in Mechanical Ventilation, Global Collaboration in Acute Care and pandemic research, the Unity Health Biobank, the Critical Care Clinical Research Unit, Cardiac Arrest Research, the Traumatic Brain Injury Lab, and Pre-Hospital Resuscitation.

Research also includes mechanism of lung injury and sepsis, as well as optimal resuscitation and issues in trauma and minimizing blood loss. There is work in progress addressing the ongoing impacts of mild or severe traumatic brain injuries, concussion research, and biomarker studies related to critical care and the COVID-19 pandemic. Driven by a commitment to continuous improvement, the pillar focuses on enhancing medical practices, particularly in life-threatening situations, through iterative and ongoing research. There is a focus on fostering highly functional team cultures that positively impact the human experience of healthcare.

Mission Statement

The overarching mission of this Pillar is to understand the biology of critical illness, discover novel treatments, develop diagnostic tools, and ultimately enhance the survival and quality of life of people suffering from time-sensitive life-threatening illnesses.
