Microsoft Excel

The Health Science Library offers three Microsoft Excel courses:

  • Excel Basics (see below for details)
  • Excel Intermediate (see below for details)
  • Excel Pivot Tables (see below for details)

Excel Basics

This hands-on workshop will provide participants with an understanding of some of the basic terminology, functions, and features of Excel. Participants will complete various instructor-led exercises and then they will have the opportunity to complete a worksheet exercise on their own.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the class, participants will be able to create a basic Workbook by doing the following:

  • Navigating between and labeling worksheets
  • Entering text, numbers, and formulas into cells using a variety of methods
  • Inserting, deleting and changing the size of rows and columns
  • Formatting cells by using colour, font, theme, border and sorting options

Target Audience: Staff and students with little to no previous experience using Excel

Duration: 1 hour

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word is recommended

Excel Intermediate

This hands-on workshop will allow participants to advance their understanding of some more complex functions and features of Excel by completing various instructor-led exercises. It is recommended as a follow-up to the Excel Basics course.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the class, participants will be able to create a detailed Workbook by doing the following:

  • Using complex numerical and textual formulas
  • Creating and inserting drop-down lists
  • Converting data into detailed, customized charts and Pivot Tables
  • Incorporating formatting such as freezing and merging, as well as conditional formatting
  • Importing data into worksheets from other sources

Target Audience: Staff and students with some experience using Excel

Duration:  1.5 hours

Prerequisite: Completion of the Health Sciences Library’s Excel Basics course is recommended

Excel Pivot Tables

Participants will have the opportunity to create and manipulate a Pivot table using a provided data set. If possible bring your own data set (and questions) for the practice portion of the workshop. Completion of the Excel Intermediate workshop is recommended.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the class, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what a pivot table is, and when to use one
  • Create an Excel pivot table
  • Manipulate an Excel pivot table

Target Audience: Staff and students with previous experience using Excel.

Duration:  1 hour

Prerequisite: Intermediate knowledge of Excel is recommended.
