Introduction to the Systematic Review Process

This workshop gives an overview of the essential parts of the systematic review process, discusses how to define a research question using PICO, and introduces the PRISMA-P 2015 checklist.

Course objectives:

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the essential parts of a systematic review, and name sources where systematic reviews can be found
  • Name the different parts of PICO and organize a research question using the PICO framework
  • Explain the importance of a systematic review protocol and evaluate part of a protocol using the PRISMA-P 2015 checklist
  • Name popular health science databases
  • Describe the components of a systematic review search strategy
  • Define grey literature and understand its importance to systematic review searching
  • List different software options for documenting and managing search results and citations
