The Centre for Urban Health Solutions (founded in 1998 as the Centre for Research on Inner City Health), is an inter-disciplinary research centre within St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. The Centre seeks to improve health in cities, especially for those experiencing marginalization, and to reduce barriers to accessing factors essential to health, such as appropriate health care and quality housing. We are committed to developing and implementing concrete responses within health care and social service systems and at the level of public policy.
Scientists working at the Centre for Urban Health Solutions are undertaking a wide range of research related to health and wellbeing. Many of us are working clinicians – we identify barriers facing our patients and come back to our Centre to develop and test solutions to address these barriers. Our scientists and staff have specialized expertise in areas such as clinical epidemiology, social epidemiology, health economics, biostatistics, health geography, health services research, population health, program evaluation and knowledge translation.
Our Centre also works with two specialized units. The Well Living House is an action research centre for Indigenous infant, child and family health and wellbeing. The Survey Research Unit has the capacity to undertake large-scale qualitative and quantitative research in multiple languages and using a range of techniques.
We are located in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The Director of the Centre for Urban Health Solutions is Dr. Stephen Hwang. There are currently close to 30 scientists associated with our Centre. Each scientist leads a unique, world-class research program and works with a team of specialized staff. The Centre also has a group of core staff responsible for administration, operations, communications, Knowledge Translation, and biostatistical analysis.
