Our Equipment and Lab Space

The Biobank’s infrastructure has been funded using money awarded by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund. This infrastructure will be used to discover and validate novel biomarkers and to promote translational innovation for different diseases and conditions.

Our location at St. Michael’s Hospital is on the 7th floor of the Li Ka Shing Research building in a secure laboratory area. We also have research equipment located in a secure section of the  Core Laboratory of St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

Equipment - St. Michael's Hospital
  • 3 ultra low -80C freezers
    • Engineered to maintain temperature uniformity and stability, suitable for the storage of biological samples, reagents and vaccines
    • Each unit has a 576 2” cryobox capacity
    • Can be accessed for research storage
  • Liquid nitrogen Fusion Freezer
    • The MVE Fusion is the world’s first self-sustaining LN2 system
    • 31,200 2ml vial capacity
    • Can be accessed for research storage
  • Two dedicated biosafety cabinets
  • Refrigerated blood processing centrifuge
  • Barcode scanner

Biobank Laboratory Information System
  • The Biobank will use a dedicated Biobank database to store study, sample, aliquot and clinical information related to biobanking studies
  • This system can be used to create unique aliquot barcodes with an electronic audit trail
  • The use of this database is available to all Unity Health investigators and it can be modified to suit the needs to different studies
