Dr. Paul Dorian was the Department Director, Division of Cardiology, University of Toronto (2007-2019) and is Staff Cardiac Electrophysiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Toronto, and a Staff Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Dr. Dorian received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal in 1976. He completed training in Internal Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, and Cardiology at the University of Toronto and completed a Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Stanford University. He is a recipient of the University of Toronto Department of Medicine Research Award, and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and Canadian Heart Rhythm Society Achievement Award. He is the Past-President of the Canadian Heart Rhythm Society, Co-PI on the NIH funded Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium, head of the cardiac arrest committee of the Canadian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium, and serves on the steering committee of multiple multicenter clinical trials in arrhythmia care. He is the Chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Quality Committee. His research interests include resuscitation science, sports cardiology, arrhythmias in athletes, basic science research in advanced cardiac life support and atrial fibrillation, and clinical research on implanted devices, antiarrhythmic drugs, and quality of life in patients with arrhythmias. He was the principal investigator of the ALIVE RCT of antiarrhythmic drugs in cardiac arrest, the Family study on predicting and preventing sudden cardiac death, the CIHR funded EpiDOSE RCT, and the Program to reduce sudden death funded by the Canadian Arrhythmia Network. He has published over 420 peer reviewed papers and is Associate Editor of the textbook Electrophysiological Disorders of the Heart.
Dr. Mohindra is an emergency physician at North York General Hospital in Toronto, a visiting scientist and laboratory co-director at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael’s Hospital and an advanced cardiac life support instructor at the McGill Simulation Centre in Montreal. He received his medical degree from Queen’s University in Kingston and attended residency at McGill University in Montreal. Rohit has an interest with training in echocardiography, electrophysiology, resuscitation physiology, and cardiac emergency care. His training as a biomedical engineer and experience with clinical research has provided him with expertise in designing, evaluating, and studying biomedical devices, especially cardiac devices.
Theresa Aves has been involved in cardiology research at St. Michael’s Hospital for over a decade and is currently the project manager of the CanROC EpiDOSE trial- the first randomized controlled trial to definitively test the potential benefit of low dose epinephrine against the current standard dose in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation. Theresa completed a post-graduate certificate in Population Health Data Analysis at the University of Victoria and a Masters in Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact at McMaster University where her research focus was in pragmatic trial design and systematic review methodology. She has provided methodological expertise in developing, analyzing and writing systematic reviews for guidelines for the World Health Organization and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. She frequently peer reviews manuscripts for Pilot and Feasibility Studies and BMC Public Health.
Currently a Senior Research Associate at St. Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Allan specializes in arrhythmia and resuscitation research. She is Chair and co-founder of CARE, a grassroots organization in Ontario that aims to increase awareness and survival from sudden cardiac arrest through various community based initiatives, including teaching all kids how to save a life. She is the project manager and co-investigator for C-SCAN, a national network that is measuring the true scope of sudden cardiac arrest across Canada. Dr. Allan is also Chair of Training and Education for CANet, a national Pan-Canadian multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral research and development network. In 2021, she was seconded to the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario to help streamline their processes for referring families of sudden cardiac death patients for cascade screening.
Melissa is completing her MSc at the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. For her thesis project, she is working with Dr. Steve Lin and Dr. Brodie Nolan at St. Michael’s Hospital to develop The PTP Score — a predictive score to determine the need for blood transfusion for injured patients using variables available in the Canadian prehospital system. Melissa’s interest in trauma research began when she worked as an undergraduate research assistant at St. Michael’s Hospital in 2019. In her free time, Melissa enjoys playing flag football and tending to her collection of tropical houseplants.
Matthew is a second-year medical student out of the University of Toronto and a Research Assistant at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is also a student researcher at York University in the Whiplash and Concussion Laboratory. Outside of research, Matthew is a Crisis Line Responder for Crisis Service Canada and a dance/sports instructor.
Melissa is the research educator in the Emergency Department at St. Michael’s Hospital. She works with closely with not only Dr. Lin but also many teams across St. Michael’s Hospital and beyond to enhance patient care and experience through research, quality improvement, education and innovation.
Richard has completed a BSc in Honours Science with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Medical Physiology at the University of Waterloo, and is currently pursuing a degree in Global Health at York University. He is a Research Assistant in the Emergency Department and has previously volunteered on several COVID-19-related projects in the Department of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery.
Vladislav received his PhD in Physics from Saratov State University in Russia in 1992. He was research scientist in Biomedical Physics in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1997–2006. He is now an Associate professor of Physics at Ryerson University in Toronto and member of iBEST Institute. His research interests include brain imaging and modeling, optical spectroscopy and imaging of tissue.
Dr. Karthi Umapathy is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University. Dr. Umapathy has been working in the area of biomedical signal processing and imaging with applications in cardiac electrophysiology, sleep neurophysiology, and functional cardiac MRI imaging. He and his team in collaboration with clinical researchers from major hospitals at Toronto have developed many advanced data processing methods in quantifying physiological changes. Many of the works involve the use of machine learning and pattern classification methods for decision making. He is a senior member of IEEE and an Affiliate Scientist at St. Michael Hospitals (iBest). He has been a recipient of prestigious NSERC, CIHR, & HSFC research grants as PI and Co-PI towards his research on cardiac arrhythmias.
Dr. Alexandra (Ali) Marquez is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota and pediatric intensivist at Masonic Children’s Hospital. She joined the Lin Lab in 2019 while working as a Clinical Associate in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children. Ali completed undergraduate in Music Performance from Emory University, her MD from McGill University Faculty of Medicine, residency in Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and pediatric critical care fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Ali also has a Master of Science in Translational Research from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on neuroprotection during resuscitation as well as device commercialization in the translational space.
